The Rising Shell: A Transforming Bowl Designed by Robert van Embricqs

An Organic Shape for Carrying Small Objects

The Rising Shell is a unique bowl designed by Robert van Embricqs that combines functionality with an organic shape. Inspired by nature's logic and honesty, this transforming bowl offers a surprising and interactive experience for users.

The Rising Shell is not just an ordinary bowl; it has the ability to open and rise up like a budding flower when needed. When not in use, it seamlessly folds back into a flat piece, creating a fascinating interaction between the material and the end user. This transformation, reminiscent of a flower opening during the day, adds an element of surprise and delight to the everyday act of using a bowl.

One of the strengths of the Rising Shell is its unique design that allows it to be shipped efficiently. By folding flat, it takes up less space compared to other similar designs. This makes it an ideal choice for those who value both functionality and sustainability.

To realize this design, Robert van Embricqs integrated the materials into the overall aesthetic. The beams of the Rising Shell are constructed using laminated bamboo, which not only provides firmness and durability but also adds a natural touch to the design. Neoprene rubber technology is incorporated between the bamboo beams, creating a minimalistic design approach and ensuring a safe and secure hinge system.

The Rising Shell's dimensions are 390mm in depth, 405mm in width, and 200mm in height. Its unique combination of materials and innovative design make it a standout piece that is both functional and visually appealing.

Interacting with the Rising Shell is a simple yet playful experience. Users can transform the bowl by using the side of a table and pushing it upwards with their hands. Once the shell is empty, it can be folded back into its flat form. This interaction adds an element of fun and engagement to the design, making it more than just a functional object.

The Rising Shell project started in January 2015 in Amsterdam as a small-scale model and was later presented at the Salone Del Mobile in April 2015. The design process involved experimenting with foam models and making incisions to determine the final angles of the bamboo beams. The challenge of maintaining the Rising Shell in its unfolded position was overcome by using screw threads on each side, allowing the bamboo beams to tighten against each other and stay firm.

The Rising Shell has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to designs that showcase exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.

The Rising Shell is a testament to the beauty and functionality that can be achieved through thoughtful design. Its transformational nature and unique combination of materials make it a standout piece that adds a touch of elegance to any space.
